Here I am, lil old me… the popular blogger, well you visit my site, god knows if you read these things because some times I can be super bitchy.

So when I get invited to screenings here in sunny Manchester and boy is it sunny, for the past two days I’ve been melting in my room and this chance to see She’s Out Of My League was the perfect opportunity to get my pasty white flesh out into the burning sun.

However to say I went in to the film with low expectations is an understatement.  It’s a RomCom for gods sake and although I do love my US comedy with the lack of publicity surrounding this one, I was a little sceptical that the only funny bits were in the trailer.

How wrong I was.

She's Not Wearing Underwear... Just one great moment!

She’s Out Of My League follows average Joe, Kirk (Jay Baruchel – A Scrawny Justin Long) who works in a dead end job with his best mates.  These mates are already putting him down but when a perfect 10, a beauty called Molly (Alice Eve) walks into his life and they become close… the world around Kirk remind him that she’s out of his league and the forces will never let this union be.

All that and he has to contend with his family and his crazy ex who seems to have been adopted by Kirk’s family.

It certainly sounds like a run of the mill romcom where the geek gets the girl but it’s actually REALLY good, even the scenes where the film started to drag contained a chuckle or two.  I don’t think I’ve chortled to a film that much in a long time.

There’s quite a few jokes and scenes where the audience laughed together and that’s something I don’t often see outside of Festivals.

What really makes this film work though is the CASTING.  From Marnie (Lindsay Sloane) the psychotic ex who pretty much flaunts her happiness in Kirks face until he finds a love of his own, she has the most entertaining role as the butt of the jokes to the boys but also steals the show during a chase scene in an airport.

Stainer (Mike Vogal) who had a Molly of his own understands the burden of being the five when the other half is a perfect ten.  He has some of the best lines.

Molly (Alice Eve) the girl, the woman who makes heads turn wherever she goes.  The girl who steals the heart of our average scrawny joe and makes him believe anything is possible.  Alice Eve appeared and she’s a natural to the screen, totally convincing as Molly the girl who falls for the geek.  I’m hoping to see more from her!

Kirk (Jay Baruchel) is like a mini Justin Long, the scrawny 2.0 version.  Funny, witty and the luckiest guy on earth to have Alice Eve climbing all over him.

Finally we have Patty (Krysten Ritter) who’s so dry as Molly’s best friend, she’ll have you in stitches even when she’s standing in the background saying nothing.  I love her in everything she’s done to date… well not everything but she certainly makes the world a better place.  With likes like “Take a shit on your hand” as an insult… awesomeness.

What makes these characters work though is that they’re all so close, believable as friends and even the extended crazy family are so out there that the film just works and makes every scene an joy to watch.  It’s not the direction that make the film but the writing.

Awww I wish I were that geek

This film is Kevin Smith Lite (When he was writing good stuff) and it’s well worth a watch.  Don’t let it pass you by, go and see it, I doubt you’ll regret it especially when the clippers come out.

A Puppy double thumbs up for this one, it surprised me and I thank it for that.  As a film it’s average, as a RomCom it’s totally above average!
