Jake West’s Doghouse

This one is really a Frightfest special. Jake was great when we all met him at the #SFXWeekender. Demoralised by the whole thing, he actually seemed interested in hanging out with horror fans which was great.
However this film stars Noel Clarke and if you do a search for that name on this blog, you will soon come to realise the hatred I have for this man and I am happy to say… He was the LOW point in this film constantly failing to deliver.
As with all of Jake’s films the concepts are very simple and centralised on horror. Doghouse saw his biggest budget to date and he certainly used it in places. Much probably went on the recognisable faces of Danny Dyer, Noel Clarke, Christina Cole & Emily Booth… well maybe the budget wasn’t broken on the last actress but it’s always nice to see Emily Booth in another horror.
She’s a Brit B-Movie scream queen and Jake gets that, having cast her in Evil Aliens also.
Doghouse takes place in a small town where the women have been infected with a virus that turns them into Evil Dead rejects. They like fresh male meat and not in a positive, womanising, stick your dick in their mouth kinda way.
We follow the men as they crack jokes and beat the crap out of anything that moves. Jake as a way of making his budgets go a long way. The plastic sheep in the middle of the road at the start was great!!
However Noel Clarke, I really don’t know how he manages to get jobs. He’s just dire. Not a patch on Danny Dyer and the rest of the cast in this film. Even the evil bride and barbarian with the huge boobs had more dynamic range then Noel and all they had to do was gargle.
Which brings me on to my next point. What was with the fancy dress in this film, the women were all in the phase of some sort of fetish. Emily Boothstarred as the Snipper, from the standee we see before she arrives, I’m guessing she was peddling her latest horror in this little village in the middle of no where.
The scenes with Danny Dyer held captive by the huge old lady who looked like someone I worked with was quality.
It’s an average film but for a horror comedy, it’s quite enjoyable. It’s a definite rent.
I had to watch this film as Jake West will be showing the unseen footage that would be included in the directors cut if the distributors would ever release it. The Directors cut of Doghouseis supposed so much better than the theatrical cut and I can’t wait to see what Jake offers up at Frightfest this weekend.
Huzzah!
